My buddy Bengus just noticed that my online nerd name “huphtur” is in the Fully Flared intro. I thought he was April fooling me until Dude sent me a screen grab from the YouTube clip.

On the top right step at the 4:03 mark, it clearly says: HUPHTUR.

Spotcovr LA Bike Ride

This Saturday I went on a bike ride with two fellow IRC nerds to contribute to Spotcovr, a web 2.oh site for skate spots, done by Ivo Janssen (keep that kid in check, he’s got some other cool stuff coming out soon).

From left to right: Me on the Riding Nemo fixie. I grew out my beard for extra hipster points. Next up, Dude on his road bike. He’s training for some triathlon and already biked 35 and ran five miles that morning. And finally Stonermike on his mountain bike. He took five bong rips in the morning.

We biked from my apartment to Downtown LA and took all kinds of photos of skate spots. We got kinda lost in downtown trying to find some food, but ended up at some super cheap market food plaza deal. The spots we documented were:

In the end we had some ice cream at Scoops (I had white chocolate and sea salt flavor, which was amazing). Overall we biked about 20 miles and hope to do it again soon, there’s still ton’s of spots to be added to Spotcovr.

Nothing But the Truth Review

Last nite I went to the Nike SB Video premiere to support Wieger. The event itself was nicely organized, easy to pick up RSVP tickets, mellow security and free popcorn.

But then the weirdness started. Each skater had to direct their own movie and they showed their “struggle” to complete this task before their parts. I understand it was all meant as a joke, and it did have some very funny moments, but its was just too weird.

Best part belongs to Omar Salazar, that dude is a beast. Another stand-out was Grant Taylor who has an amazing style and skates just about everything.

And of course Wieger’s part was badass. One of his last tricks was a heelflip backside nosegrind on Hubba Hideout! Which brings me to another gripe I have with the movie… why wasn’t this trick shown in slow-mo? There was no slow-mo in the entire video.

Also, the editing and image quality of the video wasn’t the greatest. Maybe I’m spoiled already by Ty Evans’ HD promos for the Lakai video (which I can’t WAIT to see), but overall the Nike video was just plain weird.

There’s all this talk about the high value of having a website that is community driven and connects directly with the consumer. A part of it is to help curtail negative rumors and on the positive side learn more about who actually buys their stuff or relates to their brand. I remember when all us nerds were talking to executives about this rising trend and their response was “make a myspace page”. I don’t want to bore you with this beat-to-death topic but I recently stumbled upon an interesting chain of events that involves people talking shit on a message board and the guy behind (and in front) of the curtain fires back by responding on the message board and then doing a online interview. I guess some would call this the new age of the refined PR spin. Here’s the interview and here’s the post that appeared on Slap Message Boards. This whole scenario (and I know more like this) I guess would be summed up as a piece of “Conversation Architecture“

The Man Who Souled the World

After the boring Dogtown, the so-so Gator and the awesome Jason Jessee documentaries, I was expecting a movie about the Bones Brigade next, but this weekend I heard even better news.

The most important skateboard documentary in history will probably be shown at the LA Film Festival this July. That’s right, the Steve Rocco documentary. The man who saved (or destroyed, depending who you ask) the skateboard industry.

The official site has a bunch of info about the movie, but no trailer. However I was able to snag it off the production Web site.

You know you wanna see this.

Kind of bummer when a surf company beats skateboard companies to some interesting ad concept. If this shit was in the US you know muthafukas would be suing left and right. Still a clever concept.
