Last Saturday I went on a 60 mile bike ride with a bunch of cycling nerds from SF. We rode all over Marin County and even climbed up to a 2000 foot mountain. Sure, most cyclists would classify this as a hill, but remember I’m from The Netherlands, the highest point in my country is 1059 feet.

On the decent we cruised over some rolling hills with the most amazing views ever. We were basically biking above the clouds. Never seen anything like it. I stopped to take some pictures and absorb the panorama. Unfortunately, this made me lose contact with the group and I ended up biking the last 15 miles home all alone. It was my personal tribute to Kenny van Hummel.

This is my feeble attempt at creating a shirt for the OC Fixed scene.

It’s based on that awesome/awful TV show “The OC”. Just like the show there’s tons of drama on the OC Fixed forum so I figured this design would be appropriate.

The shirt is printed with some Eco friendly water based ink on American Apparel shirts (#2001) and comes in sizes M, L and XL.

I’m selling these for only $10. Shipping is $5. Leave a note on the PayPal order if you want to pick up the shirt at my house or on a ride, and I will reimburse the $5 shipping. Sorry NO international shipping.

Shirt is kinda limited edition. So hurry up and buy before they are gone!

Use this super handy PayPal widget to buy a shirt:

My buddy Nic was in town this weekend to look for an apartment since he will be joining Incase soon.

Naturally I took him out for a bike ride. I showed him a bunch of skate spots in Orange and other points of interests.

We’re cruising around Orange High School and I notice a little shortcut in between some bars. I accelerate a bit… and all of sudden I’m flying through the air and crash hard on the ground.

I guess didn’t see the bar at the other end.

First reaction was to immediately check my bike to see if any damage was done. But to my surprise, it only had a small little scruff mark on the head tube.

Second reaction was to check for any body damage. Nothing major, except a pain in my left middle finger. I decided to just RICE it for the remainder of the weekend.

When I got to work on Monday my finger was pretty swollen and started to turn a little blue. On the advice of one my my co-workers I decided to get some X-Rays taken at a local hospital.

Apparently I have two tiny little fractures in my finger. The doctor taped up my finger in a nice splint and I have to go see some specialist next week.

No biking for me for a while.

Side note: When I went to the hospital, the nurse checked my pulse a couple times and asked if I was an athlete. Resting heart rate for a guy my age is around 70-80 beats per minute. Turns out my heart beats at 50 BPM.

This has been a somewhat “controversial” topic on the LA Fixed forum, but having lived in both Los Angeles and now in Orange County, and seeing how big the scene in Orange County is, I figured Orange County deserves it’s own forum.

I opted to go with free forum hosting by lefora. It’s different than the forum software used on most fixie forums, but it has some awesome features. The coolest one being that in order to embed a photo or video, all ya have do is paste URL of the picture, Flickr page or YouTube page and the forum will embed it. No more clicking buttons. Oh… and did I mention it’s FREE?

So for all you fixters living in Orange County, check out: Orange County Fixed.

This Saturday I went on a bike ride with two fellow IRC nerds to contribute to Spotcovr, a web 2.oh site for skate spots, done by Ivo Janssen (keep that kid in check, he’s got some other cool stuff coming out soon).

From left to right: Me on the Riding Nemo fixie. I grew out my beard for extra hipster points. Next up, Dude on his road bike. He’s training for some triathlon and already biked 35 and ran five miles that morning. And finally Stonermike on his mountain bike. He took five bong rips in the morning.

We biked from my apartment to Downtown LA and took all kinds of photos of skate spots. We got kinda lost in downtown trying to find some food, but ended up at some super cheap market food plaza deal. The spots we documented were:

Belmont High

Convention Center Ledge

Downtown Car Wash

LA Library

Piss Benches

Staples Ledge

USC Ledges

In the end we had some ice cream at Scoops (I had white chocolate and sea salt flavor, which was amazing). Overall we biked about 20 miles and hope to do it again soon, there’s still ton’s of spots to be added to Spotcovr.

Couple of weeks ago I went for my weekly 4 mile morning run and to my surprise my GPS watch told me I ran it at a 7:30 pace. I normally don’t run that fast and couldn’t figure out why, until Kyle told me this was due to me being a hipster on the fixie. Biking does wonders for the quads and helps tremendously for running. So I decided to enter the Nike Run Hit Remix and see if I could run the 5 mile race at that 7:30 pace.

The start of the race was hectic. I was in the front but somehow there were still tons of slow people, people with baby strollers and even people stopping and taking pictures ahead of me. After some weaving through traffic I finally got in my pace and started to zone out. In fact, I was so much in the zone, that I didn’t even recognize my buddy Mike giving me a high five when we crossed paths. The finish of this race is always the best, you go through the tunnel and end right inside the LA Coliseum.

My GPS watch displayed a finish time of 36:17 with an average pace of 7:10. However, it also said the length of the course was 5.07 miles (no idea how that’s possible). So I will have to wait for the official results online. But I definitely set a PR!

UPDATE: Official time is not gonna happen since the timing chips didn’t register at the start. Good thing I had my nerd watch. However, images have been posted, and I look like a sack of shit.
