The Bike Backlash
July 16th, 2007 by Crza under bikes, hate, links, trendsWow; have y’all noticed the anti-bike sentiment that is floating around? It’s targeted mainly towards the fixie crowd and I sense it’s gathering steam like the ever popular “I hate emo’s” or the old war between metal and hardcore (circa 1980′s). A part of me blames skateboarding for the hate. Skateboarders are always on the edge. Trends begin and die with skateboarders (ie: cargo pants, new eras, nike). There has always been fixed gear bikes but it wasn’t until skateboarders accepted them that the rest of world decided to drop the gears and brakes and skid around town. I personally don’t care what type of bike you ride but I have been enjoying the entries from BikeSnobNYC. However…when I see photos of fixed dudes at skate spots doing some fruity tricks it makes me want to put a stick in their tri-spokes.

If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, will Crza still shred it?

anything…ANYTHING that promotes bikes as cool, or hip,is ok with me! hit that skate spot young fixie! hit it, then get your fruit boot buddies and fight the skaters for rights to rule the spot!

Just me and the mountain lions. I can tell you one thing though…You won’t catch me riding my MTB at the brooklyn banks or the China Banks. I just got a new ride to, a white Santa Cruz Superlight. I love the woods: http://www.enginesystem.com/wps/?cat=4

I slapped an American flag on my fixed along with a stick figure sticker set of my whole family and a vanity plate that read “HTWHLS”.

i stumbled onto that site early last week from bikeforums, and definitely had a couple good laughs, even when some were aimed at myself. i can definitely empathize with the og messenger/fixie crowd hating on the sudden popularity, but thats just part of it, those guys have to let it go a bit. so what if someone wants to make their bike the most whacked out, non functional fashion disaster of all time, ill just make a joke of it the same way I make fun of some fat kid trying darkslides at the park. i dont see the reason to take it so personally. on a side note how that fella has the time to update so extensively and often says something in itself, maybe he should just go out and ride his bike rather than nitpicking. either that or i’ll gladly hire him for his fine attention to detail/wit. i like to type.

Agreed Silo. It is funny but it is sort of crazy how the dude updates so much. These updates are full blown stories to, no links to just a youtube video. I want to make it clear to I don’t hate the fixie trend, I love all things bike, I just think it’s entertaining when some one stirs shit up. I own a black and gold IRO and set it up with gold parts cause it looked good. Am I victim? Maybe, but I was also a victim during the purple anodized ringle hub faze with matching Onza bar ends. THOUGH…the skate spot shit makes my tummy ache.
