Dear AOL
January 29th, 2007 by Crza under archive, browsers, hateA friend of mine was trying to send AOL a letter about their current promotion. AOL is really hard to get in touch with so I decided to post his open letter to AOL on THC. Enjoy
AOL has bombarded the American populace with disc after disc after disc of its insipid software for YEARS now - a program that you can download from the internet without producing all of the idiotic and needless waste that ensues when you do a mass mailing - from the production of the CD-ROMs, to the packaging, to the wrapping, to the paper, to the truck delivery - every form of waste is represented. Do they care? No, as long as it ensures that some dumb fucker will install their software so he can troll around in MEMPHIS BEAR M4M chatroom or read their important, up-to-the-minute updates of American Idol til 4 in the morning every single day.
It was bad enough when it was just those stupid little cardboard slipcases, but now I open my door to find an emormous clamshell plastic package, created to mimic that of a DVD, sitting on my doorstep. Now, I know that if I got one they have most likely created two for every person living in the United States. I immediately ran to my computer to peck out a fevered, invective-laced hatemail to them, but alas, their javascript isn’t working on my PC or Mac. So what can I do? Now I have this unrecyclable lump of bullshit in my house reminding me how unrepentantly stupid the human race is, and serving as yet another example that as we learn more and more about how fragile the environment is right now, companies go out of their way to produce more and more nonbiodegradable waste. I mean, do we really need individually-wrapped pieces of gum in a sheet of plastic surrounded by cardboard? NO, we do not. Remember when gum came wrapped in paper? Yes, it was annoying, but the shit is biodegradable. Fuck gum and fuck AOL. I have HAD IT with this shit.

MySpace is the new AOL.

I still go to meetings were they think MySpace is marketing genius. Uhm, why don’t companies just invest in better websites. I know the argument is old but it’s kind of mind blowing people think it’s effective. I guess it’s laziness on the part of most marketing departments. In terms of AOL it’s junk. So many better ways to experience the web at this point.

I’ve been an AOL member since 2000. No more. I’ve been treated to the worst crap from AOL than from ANYONE in my life. Time and space prohibts me from expounding, but I will say this: They are the most intrusive, arrogant, unmitigated, brazen, unresponsive bunch of Hindus I’ve ever dealt with.
