Spotcovr Review

June 27th, 2006 by huphtur under archive, reviews, skateboarding

I always wanted to have an interweb site that would make it easy for skaters to find old and new skate spots. Sure, it has been tried before, but all those site are pretty much garbage. I was more thinking about a site that easily allows you to add spots, photos and other neat web tricks that are used all over the web nowadays.

At Sole Technology we never had time to start on a project like that, so I thought it be good fo find an intern and have him do the job, for cheap! Right before I left Sole Technology, I brought in a Dutch nerd named Ivo Janssen, aka Tivo, aka Undercore, aka Foxxyz (gotta love those nerds with all their aliases).

This Ivo kid has some serious skills. He started workin on the project right away and after a few weeks Spotcovr is almost ready for launch. Ivo hooked me up with a sneak preview, so let’s give it a short review.

When you visit Spotcovr you are presented with a map and the five newest spots. You can go directly to these spots or browse for other spots. Each spot has it’s own page with all the info you need. Map, location (with easy driving directions upon request), description, rating, photos, tags and the option to leave comments.

The biggest selling point of Spotcovr is how easy it is to add spots. You enter the location of the spot, which can be as simple as “Hollywood and Highland, Los Angeles, CA” and Spotcovr will show a little Google map to which you can pinpoint the exact location of the spot.

“Man that site is gonna be huge”–Nic of Pushingwood

The overall design of Spotcovr (done by Randy Pikul of The Colab) is very clean and very easy to use. It may be a tad narrow, but the site is built with super clean markup and CSS, so it shouldn’t be a problem to make changes. Specially when new features will be implemented.

And I know there’s a gigantic list of features that are just waiting to be implemented. But for now, let’s start filling Spotcovr with some sweet spots!

Geat job Ivo! Or, as we say in Dutch, “Goed gedaan jochie!”

UPDATE: Spotcovr is now LIVE!

  6. haveboard Says:

I’m still on the fence about this site. Bursts are the new gradients.

  7. Crza Says:

Where’s the Flash Huphz? I heard a certain photographer is going to all the spots on the site and putting locks on everything so no one gets first photo before he does. Kids, the skate game is ruthless.

  8. huphtur Says:

Crza: Flash is for homoz. A lot of spots already have photos on flickr, people just need to add the correct tag and they will show up on Spotcovr.

  9. nic Says:

    ho mooooooooooooz!

i thought word bubbles were the new gradients…

  10. r00ts Says:

nic, it’s not a word bubble, more along the lines of a pointer like on google maps. the logo was based off that idea as well.

  11. nic Says:

    shoo fool, i know that!

i wasn’t referring to the map. it was a response to the comment eluding to bursts being a design trend. my train of thought went out the window, along with my credibility (i’m really an eleven year-old pogo stick champion).

bursts are definitely hot right now, so are bubbles, and so are hand written fonts but what i wanted to say is that the burst on spotcovr makes sense to me. i think i’ve written too much and said absolutely nothing again… two thumbs up for bursts that say booya!

  12. r00ts Says:

    haahh well said!

  13. Brink Says:

Spotcvr is way more fun on a Mac! Hey Apple, start uploading some fuckin’ golf courses onto there.

  14. max Says:

http://www.skatespots.net is a site made by a dutch kid with the same idea

  15. huphtur Says:

Max: Correct. I mentioned that in this review. Skatespots.net is a simple google map mashup, Spotcovr offers a lot more than that, nd was also made by a Dutch kid named: Ivo!

  16. cspce Says:

So you made a mashup. Big deal, shit talker.
