How to Describe the World Cup Feeling to Americans
June 16th, 2006 by huphtur under archive, basketball, soccer
Imagine you’re Mark Cuban, it’s game seven of The NBA Finals, your star player has five fouls, the score is tied and there’s two minutes left.
It’s almost the same feeling but spread out over the duration of the tournament and multiplied by 11 for 90 long minutes when your country is playing.

uh ohhhhhh!

Ivory Coast gave you a good run for your money yesterday. What a strike from Kone! Van der Sar had no chance.

Dod: No doubt. I was SO nervous. Sure, it was a win, and Holland is on to the next round, but it’s not lookin so good for the match on wednesday vs Argentina (thanks nic for reminding me, you bastard!)
June 17th, 2006 at 6:55 pm
Argentina look very good… but we (England) beat them not long ago :)
I predict we will meet you in the quarter finals…
Good result for the USA today too, have they got World Cup fever over there yet?
June 18th, 2006 at 8:06 am
World Cup fever is hard to find here. Whenever the media spends some time on the US team, they hype it up way too much. “This is the best team the US has ever had.” It’s hard for them to be realistic about things.
Also the media is SO freakin ignorant/uneducated about football here, so many times I’ve heard them say “The scores are too low, if this was the NFL, it would have been 40-30″. Well shit, you get 7 points for scoring in NFL!
And what ya mean good result? Sure, the result was 1:1 but they have YET to score. Ghana kept them alive so far, and I’m hoping they (Ghana) will go to the next round. Those dudes rule.
Can’t wait for Holland vs England!

US media does hype up the team too much, The halftime show was 3 US hosts making fun of the one Italian host. So arrogant it’s embarrasing. I don’t know how the US thinks this game isn’t action packed, or that it’s too boring to watch. This game is so much more fast paced than I’ve been told. Maybe that has more to do with my love for baseball, which most people view as the anit-action sport. By the way, while I’ll cheer for the US, I hate our flags representation of all the wrong things. I wish the US fans at the cup would choose another way to show their love for the team without all that god awful red white & blue.
June 18th, 2006 at 12:50 pm
A good result… not a good performance. :)
I hope Ghana go through too, they have been great to watch so far.

I don’t know Spanish, so I tune in to Univision to avoid getting pissed at the commentary. I love how ABC and ESPN throw up those huge ass animated stat boxes. It’s cool though, we can kind of guess where the ball is in the 1/4 piece of screen we have left.

I was watching Travel Channel last nite and on comes this show Drew Carey. I guess he’s a sports photographer in his spare time and he’s doing a show about football. It’s the best piece of football broadcasting I’ve ever seen on US TV.

was in nyc over the weekend. everyone there is into it. out in la, it’s like 3 out of 40 people are into it.
June 21st, 2006 at 7:21 am
Right now I’m in Omaha, NE. Fools be trippin’ on the College World Series, so the World Cup gets no love.
I’d say maybe 1 out of 200 people are into it.
June 21st, 2006 at 10:21 am
Dude, I’ve been watching the games and I must say I’ve been into it. I even went to a bar to watch a game. I agree about the US commentary, f#cking idiots. I watch Telemundo cause they get so into it.

If you spoof your IP for a UK IP address you can watch the games streaming on the BBC website… there coverage is probably some of the best in the world… a little bias towards England maybe.

If you dont like footy already dont start!!! I’ve loved football all my life and I am growing more disappointed with it by the day. I’ve always felt there was an unknown force controlling things but this world cup only seems to be fuelling my suspicions. No team that is playing a big side ie, Brazil, holland, france and namely Argentina get anything from the ref. Tonights game Arg V Mex was a disgrace. If you get to see the game you will see that mexico got yellow cards for breathing while the argies had to practically kill someone to give a foul away. Togo couldn’t get a pen for love nor money all tournament!!! Sorry if im boring you with my rant but i had to get it off my chest. Thanks for your time
June 24th, 2006 at 3:08 pm
Oh yea, for all you conspiracy theorists. if im right about fixing games for financial gain then a team wearing a strip by adidas will win the world cup!!!!! Nike and adidas take it in turns!!!! Plus host nations always do exceptionally (and suprisingly) well (look at south korea 02, france 98 and the european championship in England 96) Its so its easy fill stadiums and line pockets!! I know Im boring so Im off. Sorry again for thrusting my bitterness upon you.

when is puma gonna get in on the action?
June 25th, 2006 at 4:09 pm
Okay, that game was the worst officiated game I’ve ever seen (NED/POR). And I wanted to watch football, not a really bad acting class.
Go England. Sheesh.
June 25th, 2006 at 7:00 pm
That was a harsh fokkin loss. I just wanna wish English the best, and may they slaughter those damn Portugal flikkers.
June 26th, 2006 at 3:34 pm
“when is puma gonna get in on the action?”
hahahaha

Let’s talk some shit and see if this thread gets to the absurd magnitude of the “emo haircut” thread.
June 27th, 2006 at 12:44 pm
haircuts are only for internet lurkers with “r”, “o” and “b” in their name…
my belated condolences on that game, apple!
